In the 36-hole marathon that is the final round of U.S. Open qualifying, Billy Hurley III found his game just in time.

The former Naval Academy golfer birdied three of his final four holes Monday to become one of four players from the Woodmont Country Club sectional qualifier in Rockville to make the field for next week’s U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

After opening with a 74, Hurley shaved off seven strokes the second time around for a 3-under 141, tying with Donald Constable and Nicholas Mason at three strokes behind medalist Chad Collins. All four will tee it up next week at Pinehurst No. 2.

Hurley, who turns 32 next week, spent five years in the Navy after graduating from Annapolis in 2004. Now playing on the PGA Tour, he tied for 37th over the weekend at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio.
